China stresses stability in talks with Vietnam

China’s President Xi Jinping emphasized peace and stability in a meeting with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang Wednesday as relations between the two countries are strained by conflict over territory in the South China Sea, Reuters reported. Xi said the neighbors should seek a political resolution to the dispute and “prevent it from affecting ties.” China’s claim over waters and shoals in the South China Sea put it in contention with Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan. Sang was expected to push for greater Chinese investment in Vietnam during his first meeting with the new Chinese president, Bloomberg reported.
