China suggests flexibility on climate change stance

Beijing suggested it may be willing to compromise in global climate change talks, suggesting a new willingness on the part of China to work with developed nations on the issue, the Financial Times reported. Yi Qingtai, China’s negotiator for climate talks, said that the "dynamics of international co-operation, especially technology transfer" would be major factors in helping China reach a sooner-than-expected peak in its carbon emissions. Yu maintained Beijing’s stance that rich nations should cut greenhouse gases by 40% from 1990 levels by 2020, but added that the targets would be established through negotiations. Yu denied suggestions of a rift between China and its climate-change ally India, which has taken a hard-line stance against making any commitments to emissions reductions itself, while insisting that developed nations should make drastic cuts.
