China surpasses US as top goods trader

China overtook the US for the first time as the world’s biggest goods trader in 2013, with record trade volumes in December, Financial Times reported. Coming fast on the heels of China taking over as the world’s largest oil importer, the shift is another milestone as the country takes its place among the world’s most powerful nations. The total value of China’s imports and exports in 2013 was US$4.16 trillion, a 7.6% increase from a year earlier on a renminbi-adjusted basis, according to figures released by the Chinese government on last Friday.
