China Telecom (CHA.NYSE, 0728.HKG) will consider rolling out its 4G mobile network on a more common standard, allowing for a quicker buildout, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing the company’s chief executive. China Mobile (CHL.NYSE, 0941.HKG), the country’s biggest carrier, began testing its homegrown 4G network last year and is expected to lead the market in high-speed mobile service. However, if China Telecom decides to use a more common, foreign-developed standard, that could push the companies into closer competition. Licenses for 4G are expected to be issued this year. Analysts said China Telecom, the smallest of the three state-owned mobile carriers, will still have difficulties matching China Mobile’s investment into the network.
