China has made huge progress in its ability to force the repatriation of fugitives suspected of economic crimes, according to a report by the country’s top discipline watchdog seen by China Daily.
A total of 1,300 Chinese fugitives were returned to the country to face trial in 2017, of which 347 were officials suspected of corruption. China also recovered over $150 million of illicit assets last year, the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced.
The discipline authorities have also made it extremely tough for party and government officials to flee the country. The number of newly escaped fugitives dropped from 101 in 2014 to just four in 2017, according to the CCDI.
