China to announce green car subsidy by end-May

China is soon to release details on the country’s long-awaited subsidy program aimed at boosting purchases of electric and hybrid cars, the South China Morning Post reported. Already approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the plans are awaiting final approval from the State Council and an announcement is expected by the end of May. The scheme would allow for subsidies of up to RMB60,000 (US$8,785) for individual purchases of pure electric vehicles as Beijing moves to reduce carbon emissions in what is now the world’s largest and fastest growing car market.
