Volkswagen plans to produce a new version of the Passat – the latest incarnation of the long-lived and popular model – and it will be a stretched model to fit in with the way many Passats are used in China if not in the rest of the world.
The Passat has been a popular car in China since its first introduction several years ago. Shanghai-VW started building what was called the Lingyu.
But the new stretched Passat will be something different. It will 120mm longer than its equivalent European and North American model. This is to give it more rear leg room as the Passat in China is often used as a chauffeur-driven car and making the rear more luxurious is more important than driver handling.
China Car Times reports the new B7 generation Passat is set to launch in early 2011 and will be built domestically.
