China urged the US to drop implementation of the Taiwan Relations Act, a law passed in 1979 that pledges US military support for Taiwan if it is attacked by the mainland. Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said the law infringes upon China's sovereignty and interferes in China's internal affairs. Kong added that the US should scrap the law and not send the wrong message to Taiwan independence forces. Kong's statement came one day before US President Dick Cheney was to arrive in China for talks that are expected to include the Taiwan issue.
