China tries to keep oil spill out of international waters

China is hurrying to prevent an oil spill from reaching international waters, the AP reported. Crude oil was released into the Yellow Sea in the port of Dalian after a series of explosions on pipelines owned by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) offloading oil into a storage facility. While government leaders have said the spill is under control and there has been no environmental impact, an official with the State Oceanic Administration warned that the spill will be difficult to clean up in the five days the government estimates. The longer the oil remains in the water, the more likely it is to spread to international waters. "Government and business leaders have been telling media that there’s no environmental impact. From Greenpeace’s perspective, that’s very irresponsible," said Greenpeace spokesperson Yang Ailun. "It’s too early to tell."
