Bank card services provider China UnionPay (CUP) said on Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with Taiwan Financial Information Service to allow the use of mainland bank cards at 64% of automatic teller machines (ATMs) in Taiwan, state media reported. This boosts the China bank card association’s presence in Taiwan, while CUP bank cards have been accepted by Taiwan merchants since August 2009. According to the terms of the agreement, ATMs from 18 Taiwan banks will begin accepting CUP debit cards immediately. Each card is permitted to withdraw a maximum cash equivalent of RMB 10,000 (US$1,472) per day.
