China mobilized a SWAT team, attack dogs and plainclothes security officers in central Beijing after anonymous online activists tried to start a “Jasmine Revolution” for the second Sunday in a row, the Wall Street Journal reported. The huge security operation in Beijing disrupted normal shopping and attracted many curious bystanders, while police in Shanghai tried to disperse thick crowds by blowing their whistles and shoving some people. The online protest appeals urged people to silently “take a stroll” past designated sites in the capital and several other Chinese cities. China has been deploying a heavy hand against protests in recent weeks to prevent the kind of unrest occurring in the Middle East and North Africa, including confining political activists to their homes and tightening internet controls.
