China won't pressure Myanmar junta

China rejected US demands for increased pressure from the international community on Myanmar, AP reported. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said the international community had to be objective and provide constructive assistance to Myanmar. She also said that sanctions were not helpful. Jiang Yu made her remarks a day after the US urged the international community to increase pressure on Myanmar’s ruling military junta and revealed that it had asked China to help arrange a new visit to Myanmar by UN Security Council envoy Ibrahim Gambari. Myanmar’s Deputy Foreign Minister had also held meetings with a Chinese official in Beijing recently. The US has a complete ban on imports from Myanmar, while China has been increasing economic ties with the country, including developing natural gas deposits there.
