China wraps up 10-year leadership change

The congressional meeting that concluded China’s once-in-a-decade power change closed Sunday with the country’s new leadership promising heavier social spending and a tougher fight against corruption, the Associated Press reported. On Thursday, the National People’s Congress appointed Xi Jinping as president and Li Keqiang as premier. The new leaders will inherit a waning, export-based economic model in which inequality as well as wealth grew during the past decade. In the coming months, the world will look to the new government for signs of economic and political reform as it expands its power base and combats corruption and vested interests.
