Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies may participate in a US congressional hearing on potential national security threats presented by Chinese telecoms, Reuters reported. The company, which is negotiating terms with the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee on joining the Sept. 13 hearing, will participate only if the “appropriate arrangements” are agreed to, Huawei spokesman William Plummer said. The terms that would bring the company into the congressional chambers were not specified. The intelligence committee will review, among other things, the potential that Chinese telecommunications companies active in the US would engage in foreign espionage on behalf of the Chinese government, the committee said in a statement Thursday. ZTE (0763.HKG, 000063.SZ), Huawei’s primary Chinese competitor, agreed in late August to join the hearing.
