Chinese media mirrors US protectionism claims

Chinese state newspaper The Global Times reported that the US had violated WTO trading rules on soybean production, accusing the administration of dumping the product on the Chinese market.

The article claims that subsidies from the US government have given domestic soybean farmers an unfair competitive advantage, and robust retaliatory measures must be taken to prevent further dumping.

“Strong restrictive measures need to be taken against the massive subsidies and dumping of soybeans by some countries on China. This can reduce the adverse effects of imported soybeans on the Chinese market.” The report said.

The rhetoric parallels noises coming from Washington regarding unfair and illegal Chinese trade practice, particularly in the areas of metals and intellectual property. President Trump is expected to sign in further tariffs on high-tech products by the end of the week.
