Chinese products draw closer scrutiny

Fear of contaminated Chinese products is rising among China's trade partners, the Wall Street Journal reported. A problem that was once the almost exclusive concern of the US is now increasingly raised among European Union members and several Asian markets. Several contaminated or defective products linked to Chinese business have surfaced in recent months, ranging from tires to toothpaste. More countries are boosting inspections after Chinese-made toothpaste containing diethylene glycol, a chemical used in antifreeze, was found in the US and other countries in May. This week, the European Food Safety Authority signed an agreement with the US Food and Drug Administration to share scientific information. Last year, 48% of 924 shipments rejected by the EU came from China. By value, Chinese imports to the EU amount to 15% of the total.
