[photopress:Blue_Knights.jpg,full,alignright]Grant Zhou Yang and three other Chinese exchange students will be Urbana University’s first to receive a master’s degree in business administration. Urbana University is in Urbana, Illinois. Think Chicago and you are not far off.
Grant Zhou Yang said, ‘I didn’t know before I came here that I could do this. I thought we were going to be alone, study alone, but after I came here I was involved in everything.’
During his first month at the university, he worked to overcome the language barrier. The textbook British English taught in China is not the same as American. But after three months, he said he could grasp what his professors and peers were saying.
Once able to communicate, Yang joined the Blue Knights basketball team, which he calls a second family. Yang said he and his friends have been embraced by the students, even being invited to three Thanksgiving dinners.
John Thomas, dean of the College of Business, said Urbana’s students have benefited from having an international presence in the classroom. The exchange program has 18 Chinese students continuing toward a master’s degree.
Then comes the line which shows, perhaps, where the problem lies for China in students going to the United States for study.
After receiving his MBA Yang will take a broadcast reporting position in Los Angeles.
