Ching Cheong spy verdict due within days

A Beijing court will deliver a verdict within days in the spying case against Hong Kong journalist Ching Cheong, a senior Hong Kong-based mainland official told the South China Morning Post. Ching, 57, a correspondent for Singapore's Straits Times, has been held for more than 16 months since his detention for allegedly spying for Taiwan. Ching pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which have not been disclosed. His trial in the Beijing No 2 Intermediate People's Court was over in a day, raising concerns in Hong Kong as to whether he was given a fair trial, the newspaper reported.
