Chip design begins shift to China in 24-36 months

San Jose-based programmable semiconductor maker Xilinx Inc said it will move some of its chip design activity to China within two or three years. The firm has an undisclosed stake in Suzhou-based chipmaker He Jian Technology and plans to supply it with contract work later this year. Xilinx Chief Executive Willem Roelandts said his company wanted to take advantage of China's lower cost structure and move activity to Asia, which he said was becoming the center of digital consumer electronics.
