A carton of cigarettes is the most popular gift to give or receive for Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, state media reported. According to a survey conducted by the Jiangsu center for Disease Control and Prevention, over half of respondents said they will give cartons of cigarettes as gifts to families and business partners, despite 68% of those polled saying they were fully aware of the health hazards connected with smoking. "Brand name and expensive cigarettes are always the safest choice for gift giving in China to show respect," said Wu Yiqun, deputy director of the Thinktank Research Center for Health Development. Spring Festival is a critical season for China’s retailers who depend on the week-long holiday to boost sales revenue for the year. Retail sales for the period are often used as an indicator of consumer confidence and the overall health of the economy.
