US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner called for economic cooperation between China and the US ahead of high-level meetings between the two countries, AFP reported. “Simply put, few global problems can be solved by the US or China alone. And few can be solved without the US and China together,” Clinton and Geithner said in a joint statement released before the Strategic and Economic Dialogue, which will begin on Monday in Washington DC. Clinton and Geithner said that “bold steps our two nations have taken” were largely responsible for blunting the force of the global economic crisis and that the US and China must lay the foundation for “balanced and sustainable growth.” The two American officials called for China to open up its financial sector and reduce its dependence on exports as the driver of its economy.
