In the final hours before the US election, the Chinese government dropped its veil of impartiality with a scathing commentary on the Bush administration by former Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen who accused the presidential incumbent of "cocksuredness and arrogance" and said the war in Iraq had destroyed the global anti-terror coalition. Writing in the China Daily, he laid into the so-called Bush Doctrine, saying it advocated United States rule over the world. China normally avoids commenting on US politics, saying it does not interfere in the internal affairs of another country. Qian made no reference to US Democratic challenger John Kerry.
