Five Chinese non-governmental organizations have accused Apple of using suppliers with public records of environmental violations, underscoring growing opposition to environmental degradation in the world’s fastest growing economy, the Financial Times reported. The groups have sought to persuade 29 big electronics brands to contain pollution in their supply chains over the past year, but singled out Apple as unresponsive. According to the report, citizens of the eastern city of Kunshan say they have seen an increase in cancer rates since two of the suppliers, Kaedar Electronics (Kunshan) and Unimicron Electronics, moved into their town. Analysts confirmed that Unimicron and Kaedar’s parent company, Pegatron, supply to Apple, but could not confirm whether Kaedar does. Apple declined to verify whether it sourced products from the manufacturers; with very few exceptions, Apple does not disclose the names of its suppliers. Carolyn Wu, an Apple spokeswoman, commented that: “We require that our suppliers … use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes wherever Apple products are made.”
