China drought ends, flooding begins

Torrential rains have alleviated a serious drought in central China but are now prompting concerns about flooding, the South China Morning Post reported. Heavy downpours have been ongoing in previously drought-stricken provinces such as Guizhou and Hunan since Friday, and are expected to continue for the next three days. Some 600,000 residents of Hunan in 103 of the province’s cities have already been affected by the flooding over the weekend. One Hunanese city recorded 276 millimeters (10.86 inches) of rain in three days. In Guizhou, the Wangmo river is already three meters higher than the recommended safe level and authorities have evacuated some residents.
