China will begin regulating student test-prep books

China’s Ministry of Education will increase regulatory oversight of the publication and distribution of test-prep books for primary and middle school students, state media reported. The Ministry will work with the General Administration of Press and Publication to “further regulate the editing, printing, and distribution work” of student test books. Young students in China often do extra exercises to score better on exams. Schools have been criticized recently for forcing students to buy extra test-prep materials, often involving kickbacks to publishing houses. Regulations were last revised in 2001 and stipulated that schools were not allowed to force students to purchase extra test books, or to organize their sale.
