China's Huawei helps Iran track mobiles

China’s Huawei Technologies signed a contract to install equipment that will help Iran track the location of mobile phone users, The Wall Street Journal reported. Huawei previously provided support service to MTN Irancell, Iran’s second-largest telecom, for similar tracking. Huawei is the largest foreign player in Iran’s telecom industry after many Western companies pulled out in the wake of a government crackdown on protestors following controversial 2009 elections. Huawei has additionally sold equipment to MTN Irancell for a news service.  An anonymous source told The Wall Street Journal that as part of the sales pitch to Iran, Huawei emphasized their experience on censoring news in China. Huawei has roughly 1,000 employees in Iran. Huawei representatives said that all countries’ police forces routinely require access to mobile networks and that the company is in compliance with regulations and UN economic sanctions on Iran.
