Chinese census shows rapidly aging population

Data from the recently conducted national census was released today, and shows a sharp drop in the number of young people in China, AP reported. Of a total population of 1.34 billion, people over 60 years old now make up 13.3% of the population, up almost three percentage points over the last decade, while Chinese people under 14 declined to 16.6% of total population, down 6.3 percentage points over the same period. The trend has some experts speculating that China will end the one-child policy. Other trends revealed by the census include a surge in urbanization: Nearly half of the population now lives in cities, up from 36% at the end of 2000. Average household size now numbers 3.1 people, compared to 3.44 in the last decade. President Hu Jintao has publicly committed China to maintaining its population control policy, and a correspondingly low birth rate, but has said that services for the elderly should be improved.
