DreamWorks plans China operation

DreamWorks Animation (DWA.NASDAQ) plans to open a new operation in Shanghai to target China’s booming film market, AFP reported quoting a recruitment company that is hiring for the venture. DreamWorks, the company behind “Kung Fu Panda,” has engaged Los Angeles-based RSR Partners to hunt for a president and other staff for the business. RSR said it did not know when the China venture would open, but that DreamWorks is looking to “establish a production and development presence.” An anonymous source said DreamWorks chairman Lewis Coleman met with the state-owned China Film Group two weeks ago. China limits its number of imported films to 20 per year, so foreign media companies are increasingly collaborating with local media partners to set up joint ventures in the country. Two other Hollywood production companies, Relativity and Legendary, have launched ventures with Chinese partners to gain access to the world’s fastest-growing film market, where box office sales rose 64% to US$1.5 billion in 2010.
