At least 14 people died and dozens were injured after two separate attacks struck Xinjiang’s city of Kashgar over the weekend, the South China Morning Post reported. Local officials said both strikes were terrorist attacks and the assailants on Saturday night were Uygurs. The identities of yesterday’s attackers were still to be verified. Sunday’s tragedy took place in a major shopping street, in which 12 assailants “hacked to death or injured more than 10 pedestrians and policeman,” state media said. In Saturday’s incident, at least seven people were killed when two knife-wielding men hijacked a truck, rammed it into a street of food stalls, and began hacking pedestrians. The weekend’s violence follows a July 18 attack in Hotan city, located about 500 kilometers southeast of Kashgar, in which 14 rioters attacked a police station, causing four fatalities.
