China Southern Airlines (ZNH.NYSE, 600029.SH, 1055.HK), the country’s largest air passenger carrier, had previously expressed concerns that the airport at which a Henan Airlines plane crashed on Tuesday was not suited for night landings, the New York Times reported. The report conflicts with that of Li Jian, vice director of the Civil Aviation Authority of China, who said that the airport was built to handle night landings. The crash, which left 42 passangers dead and 54 injured, prompted the resignation of Li Qiang, president of Henan Airlines. It has also raised broader questions about the safety of small local airports, built as part of a recent wave of government projects designed to draw economic activity to more rural regions.
