The Xiamen-Kinmen undersea cable project, the first cross-Strait undersea cable to link the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, is nearing completion. Upon completion, calls from Taiwan to the mainland will enter Xiamen’s telecommunications network via undersea cable, then will be transferred to other provinces on the mainland, and vice versa. The 50-60 kilometer direct undersea cable will not only greatly reduce communication costs, but will also significantly improve the stability and reliability of telecommunication between the mainland and Taiwan. What’s On Xiamen reports that, in addition, another cross-Strait undersea cable project which will connect Fuzhou, capital city of Fujian province, with Taiwan’s Tamsui, will likely gain the approval of the Taiwanese authority at the end of the year.
