Dalai Lama accuses China of 'Cultural Revolution' against Tibetans

The Dalai Lama told lawmakers in Paris that China was continuing its crackdown in the Tibet region, and is not adhering to an "Olympic truce" between Tibetans and the government while the Games are under way, the Wall Street Journal reported. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader compared the current climate in Tibet to the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76, which included "arbitrary arrests, summary executions and lethal torture." He also said Beijing planned to relocate a million Han Chinese to Tibet following the Games, which an official with the Dalai Lama’s offices in Paris called, "a form of demographic aggression." The comments are likely to exacerbate tensions between both the Dalai Lama and China, and between Beijing and Paris. The Dalai Lama was made an honorary citizen of the French capital earlier this year.
