shipbuilder is in talks with German finance/shipowner company Hansa Treuhand over an order for three new 5,600 teu container ships. If confirmed, this would be China's first contract with an overseas company for this type of ship.
Until now, all post-panamax container ships built in China have been for local delivery. China Ocean Shipping Co and China Shipping Container Lines have between them ordered up to 20 vessels around 5,600 teu capacity. Shipbrokers are quoting prices of around US$57m for the potential new German order, which is about 5 per cent below that of other shipyards in South Korea and Japan for similar-sized ships.
Dalian's new building capacity will allow delivery of the ships by early 2006, which is a big improvement on time schedules from shipbuilders elsewhere in Asia.
Hansa Treuhand is one of Germany's leading names in ship-owning and finance, and the company has an extensive fleet of container ships and tankers that are on longterm charter to the container carriers.
