Dangerous waste centre in operation
China's first disposal centre for dangerous and harmful waste started operation in September in Tianjin, Xinhua reported. The Yn130m centre is capable of dealing with 37,000 tons a year. Waste from factories and hospitals is disposed of by incineration, burial and by physical chemical treatment.
According to official data, China produces some 9m tons of dangerous waste each year, three times its annual disposal capacity. The central government has pledged to spend Yn20bn during the 10th five-year plan (2001-05) to solve the problem.
