Demand drives Shanghai's market

The deputy director of Shanghai's municipal tourism administration commission told Business Weekly that the city would soon have sufficient luxury hotels. "The city should tell [star-rated hotels] to calm down a bit," said Dao Shuming. Currently, there are 15 five-star, 27 four-star and 110 three-star hotels in the city. Another eight or nine international operators, including Four Seasons Hotel , are looking to enter the market in the near future, said the report.

For the time being, however, it can be hard for business people to find a hotel room during the week. According to the conference organiser CMP, average occupancy in the city for four- and five-star properties on weekdays is running at 85 per cent.
