Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian has vowed to resume direct links with the mainland by the end of next year. He said that the task of easing cargo transport across the Taiwan Straits would be a priority and the implementation of direct links would accelerate after the Taiwanese presidential elections next year.
This contrasts sharply with the hostile and ideology-laden rhetoric used by Chen towards the Beijing government in recent months, reported the Financial Times.
