Draft law will fang naughty messengers

[photopress:chinese.jpg, full, alignright]A new draft law will make sending a woman indecent text messages or e-mails a crime.

The draft rules (which also cover unwanted advances, public groping and conversations about sex and also address domestic violence) are the Shanghai’s first attempt to define sexual harassment. A meeting of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai People’s Congress Wednesday reviewed the draft rules, which stipulate that sexually harassing women with words, pictures, electronic information or physical contact, is forbidden.

Hui Xiquan, a member of the Standing Committee of Shanghai People’s Congress, said, ‘The new law aims to encourage women to protect themselves by legal means.’ The draft states that officials who do not stop domestic violence or help victims will face ‘administrative punishment’ although that is not defined.

As far as the Internet is concerned if obscene words, pictures or restricted video are shown to a woman and it makes her physically or mentally uncomfortable, this is sexual harassment.
