The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) has stopped construction of two hydropower dams in the upper Yangtze River region, AP reported. Construction by state-owned power producers Huadian Power and Huaneng Power had started in January without proper environmental assessments or approval from the ministry, it said. "To protect the management of the environment … and to punish the violation of the environment and illegal acts regarding the environment, the environmental ministry decided to suspend the construction projects in the middle reaches of the Jinsha River," said MEP spokesman Tao Detian in a statement. The dams are part of a US$30 billion project along the Yangtze’s Jinsha river tributary in southwestern China.
