EU, China deal on textiles

Following apparent deadlock, Europe and China made a deal for future limits on Chinese textile exports to Europe, reported the Wall Street Journal. EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai reached agreement Monday that some 75 million China-made garments would be allowed into the EU. While this year's quota will be raised, however, some of next year's unfilled quotas will be reduced. The deal must still be ratified by the 25 EU member states before the garments can appear in EU stores. Several European countries balked at recent attempts by European retailers to make huge import orders before pre-agreed quotas come into effect in the winter, resulting in ships being held up in port, unable to unload their goods.
