An exiled Chinese dissident who was involved in the 1989 Tiananmen protests has been held in China for six months without charge since trying to enter the country to visit his family last October, AP reported. Zhou Yongjun left China for New York after serving two years in prison for his role in the protests, which were violently suppressed by Chinese troops. He became a US permanent resident but was detained in Shenzhen in the late 1990s, while on another family visit, and spent two years in a labor camp. Zhou’s sister, Zhou Sufen, said that she received official confirmation on Monday that her brother was being held by the Chinese authorities. Speaking in Los Angeles, Zhou’s girlfriend, Zhang Yuewei, said the family received word of his whereabouts from released detainees who had contact with him. They said Zhou had been accused of political and financial crimes and most recently of fraud.
