FedEx plans to boost its use of Shanghai as an international cargo hub, while more than doubling its weekly flights from China to the US and increasing services to other destinations. The plans are based on the company receiving authorization from the US Department of Transportation to fly 12 new services, following an agreement earlier this year between the Chinese and American governments to add almost 50 new flights a week between the two countries. At present a total of only 54 flights a week are allowed on US-China routes. In a separate development state media reported that FedEx had also signed a memorandum of understanding with the new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on the possible relocation of its Asia-Pacific hub there from Subic Bay in the Philippines. The head of FedEx China was quoted as saying he expected a decision to be made on the move within the next 12 months.
