First lawsuit in tainted milk scandal accepted

A court in Hebei province officially accepted a compensation lawsuit filed by an alleged victim of the dairy scandal, the first known case accepted since the scandal unfolded in September the South China Morning Post reported, citing state media. The plaintiff, a Beijing resident surnamed Li, has demanded US$4,538 in compensation for his one-year-old child, who developed kidney stones after drinking melamine-tainted milk made from Sanlu baby formula powder for several months. Five other suits have been filed against Sanlu but they demanded higher compensation and have yet to be accepted by the courts. State-owned Sanlu was one of 22 firms whose products were found contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine. Melamine was added to boost the nitrogen content of substandard food, allowing it to pass protein-level tests. At least six children died from the tainted products and 300,000 were made ill.
