[photopress:chipsfab.jpg, full, alignright]In the United States big chip companies such as Intel and Texas Instruments dominate the established markets and designing chips with millions of transistors is getting harder and more expensive, requiring scores of engineers, a couple of years and $25 million to $50 million.
As a result the United States isn’t landing all of the new start-ups. Mike Fister, CEO of Cadence Design Systems in San Jose points out that China has more than 800 fabless semiconductor companies. He said, ‘The Chinese companies are good at taking five chips and putting them into one. Where we as a region do best is in coming up with something that hasn’t been done before.’
