Foreign papers now printed in China

Foreign newspapers are being printed in China for the first time since 1949 in a tie-up between Canada-based NewspaperDirect, which provides "print-on-demand" services, and Founder, a Beijing-based technology group, the Financial Times reported. A Founder unit called Easiprint has already begun printing and distributing individual copies of foreign newspapers – including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, the Times of London, Le Monde and Mainichi Shimbun – in Beijing and will expand the trial to Shanghai next month. However, the industry regulator, the General Administration of Press and Publication, said the agreement may not be legal. "Are they distributing them domestically? That's not allowed," a GAPP official told the newspaper.
