Sun Zhengcai, previously a rising star in China’s Communist Party and considered a possible rival to Xi Jinping for the presidency, was sentenced to life in prison for corruption yesterday, despite pleading guilty and publicly expressing regret for his actions.
Sun was a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo until last year, when he was removed from office. He faced charges of accepting over RMB 170 million ($26.7 million) in bribes over a 15-year period.
As the Wall Street Journal reports, Sun will also have all his assets and political rights removed following the sentence. State media reports that Sun will not appeal the sentence.
