China's fuel imports increased 69% in the first four months of 2004 compared to the same period last year, according to China's largest refiner. China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation said total oil consumption could exceed 300 million tons in 2004, 120 million tons of that imported. The company said power utilities were driving increased demand, but also private cars. China Petroleum said annual consumption of gasoline was expected to increase from 40 million tons in 2003 to 45 million in 2004.
