[photopress:Nanjing_Lu_Shanghai.jpg,full,alignright]The claim is that Shanghai’s most exclusive hotel will open early 2008. The Place Hotel & Spa will be reserved exclusively for the use of in-house guests. It will be an integral part of the Park Place development on Nanjing Lu West (seen at night in our illustration.)
The ‘guests only’ policy will ensure that well-heeled travelers can expect to enjoy complete exclusivity and utter privacy. Some of us, who are coarser spirits, might find this a tad restrictive but we are not the target market. If only because guests can expect to pay probably the highest room rates in Shanghai.
Guests will pay a fixed rate with no additional fees. Every room will enjoy 24-hour butler service, advanced technology, full office facilities, WIFI Broadband throughout the hotel, in-room breakfast and lounge facilities. My guess is if you wanted to drink Taittinger Blanc de Blancs for breakfast that would be an extra. And it might be thought a tad vulgar.
General Manager, Philippe Charraudeau is in charge, and says: ‘The Place will not have good service, it will have great service.’ As he has worked at The Savoy in London, The Mandarin in Hong Kong and The Oriental in Bangkok he has the experience of luxury hotels to make that claim.
Oddly, the hotel will resurrect the idea of the Long Bar which was a feature of the Shanghai Club. This bar is 32-metre long and does not seem to be quite in the spirit of things but this may simply because the concept is so novel.
The standard room size is 45sqm — think small ballroom — and every room has three-meter-high ceilings. It all sounds totally amazing. And to think most journalists will never see the interior. Life can be so unfair.
