State media regulators have blocked sales of Tencent’s latest blockbuster video game just days after it went online, the Wall Street Journal reports, delivering a further blow to the internet giant’s ailing online game business.
Regulators canceled the operating license of “Monster Hunter: World,” a game in which players navigate fantasy landscapes and battle with mythical creatures, due to the “large number of complaints” they received regarding the game’s content, according to Tencent. The exact nature of the complaints was not specified.
Tencent had high hopes that “Monster Hunter” would inject new vigor into its rather stagnant video game business. By the time of its launch the game had already received over 1 million preorders, according to online sales platform WeGame.
Tencent’s shares took a 2.4% hit in Hong Kong following the news, with second-quarter earnings due on Wednesday.
