Food security is becoming an increasingly worrying concern for Chinese officials. China is set to record a drop in its output of grain for the fifth year in a row.
The deputy director of the Agricultural and Rural Committee of China's legislature said that although
the country's grain reserves are quite massive, they would be depleted in two years
time at the current rate of production. Such a development would force China to import
more grain from other countries at a rate much higher than domestic
production.
The National Bureau of Statistics recently announced that due
to a sharp decrease in growing acreage, this year's summer grain yield would likely fall by
2.4%, or 2.4 million tons.
