Grain production not enough to feed country: experts

China has enough grain to feed its 1.3bn people for now, but the future looks questionable, according to China's agricultural advisors, citing a rising population, greater consumption spurred by improving living standards, declining agricultural acreage and poor infrastructure. China's grain harvest peaked at 512m tons in 1998, then declined due to bad weather and fewer farmlands. Beijing has abolished farm taxes, raised subsidies and promised to spend more on irrigation and other infrastructure projects.
